On board with Dan Atherton and Manuel Ducci at Finale Ligure

by Matt Wragg

Top Italian racer Italian Manuel Ducci strapped on a headcam to chase Dan Atherton down PS4 here in Finale Ligure.

Some early results are in too, Nico Vouilloz seems to be in his usual, dominant form and Dan Atherton is hitting top-5 kinda pace...

If that's the quality of a Contour I'm glad I bought a GoPro..

I think they have it on low quality setting. I have one and put it on high quality and it is just as good as GoPro.

whats the point of having it on low quality if its going to be viewed by thousands of people? there is none.

i was gonna say it doesnt look that tech, but then maybe thats cos each rock was represented by a single pixel?

I couldn't tell you cooper, It's not my camera. All I know is that I didn't know mine was on low quality until I plugged it into my computer and messed around with the settings. Contours are much more tech friendly because it has so many settings to choose from like dusk and mid-day, low medium and high quality, picture taking intervals, contrast type stuff. I don't know if the GoPro has this but from what I know it doesn't. These guys obviously haven't messed around with the settings before this to get the best quality. I think I might have just started another GoPro vs Contour debate. But thats alright, it is the internet.

Either way, the setting looks beautiful. That last part decending with the ocean on the left looked incredible.

I'm so glad to see Dan back riding properly again. Gravity Enduros and the like really seem to suit him. He's going to be a serious challenger in this area of the sport at this rate

Sure the GPS data is kind of cool for about 20 seconds but its just a novelty after that for me. After all I'm trying to watch mountain biking, not a green dot. Sorry, just my opinion...

flag Bjammin (Oct 23, 2011 at 19:44)
I agree. if your trying to map out some backwoods off the map stuff, this could be a real help, as well as with training. It is also cheaper than having a contour And a garmin or whatever. That said, gps data isn't worth $100 extra for me, or probably most others who haven't already dropped their cash on a bike computer

maybe he does'nt know what you guys are talking about - but he does know what HE is talking about ! and i agree, so stupid : Go Pro is better - No Contour is better blah blah blah...the FACT is : both have their merits, and i have both and find the color on Contour better, but the sound on Go pro better etc etc; and it is also about personal preferential use [ the type of sport or action you are doing ] and often the quality of the vid once done is determined by the editing and the quality of your computer [ gigs etc ]

flag FunnBOB (Oct 23, 2011 at 11:00)
Looks like a great ride down however... hah! contour is definitely not impressive - sound, quality, light, etc.. the gps is a great feature though (when you zoom in you can see the typical 2-5m offset)

I personally believe go-pro is way better manufactured but still lacks some features and the extreme 170 degree wide angle can be confusing at times.

The one steve peat has been using (forgot the name) has been upgraded & has massively improved.

Please leave your opinions, its always interesting to hear fellow bikers and their views Smile

P.s.: I know this post is not there to review the camera's however, it is a good opportunity..

i think it sa pretty cool little video. id not seen the GPS footage in there before. its pretty nifty i think. means you can track your progress on sections/tracks as u ride them more etc. and also means as a race you can see how your doing in certain sections and where u loose time etc . but that is deffo a low quality upload. as this is my cheaper ( 1 week old ) contour HD 1080 tester video :
http://vimeo.com/30753501
and the footage is way better ( make sure HD is on ) even if i wasnt pointing in the right place

was anyone else waiting for the rider infront of Dan to get out of the way. seemed to hold him up for the whole run, which would be pretty annoying if this is a race run (dunno how Enduro events work)

It's cool because it's part of the weekend coverage from the event, this is a video from a stage. If there were no video, you'd complain that you only saw pics and want a video.

It's cool, because he's behind Dan the Man, , it's cool because the single track looks sweet and it's even cooler that he washed out, got up and hauled ass to catch them again. But it's really cool, because I wish I was there riding with them!
